Honors/AP High School Activities
Water Electrolysis
This program includes a laboratory experiment designed to give students hands-on experience with running an electrochemical experiment using a 9V battery, water, and air. Coupled with this experiment is brief course material integrating learning objectives including:
A practical approach to the scientific method.
Balancing chemical equations, generally and with regards to electrochemical cells.
An introduction to the theory behind catalysts.
An introduction to the globally important Haber-Bosch process.
An overview of possible sustainable alternatives and how scientists are tackling them.
This activity can also cover additional information regarding acid-base chemistry, chemical equilibria, and scientific communication.
