Honors/AP High School Activities

Water Electrolysis

This program includes a laboratory experiment designed to give students hands-on experience with running an electrochemical experiment using a 9V battery, water, and air. Coupled with this experiment is brief course material integrating learning objectives including:

  1. A practical approach to the scientific method.

  2. Balancing chemical equations, generally and with regards to electrochemical cells.

  3. An introduction to the theory behind catalysts.

  4. An introduction to the globally important Haber-Bosch process.

  5. An overview of possible sustainable alternatives and how scientists are tackling them.

  6. This activity can also cover additional information regarding acid-base chemistry, chemical equilibria, and scientific communication.
